120. Jeremiah Is About To Die

Jeremiah 23-26

He: Jerusalem

Perhaps some would accuse me of always "harping" on the doctrine of the Trinity, even when the Bible does not mention it.  However, let me say this in my defence; I almost never bring up the doctrine of the Trinity unless the Trinitarians have first tried to make the Bible speak of it, where the Bible does not.  Then I focus on it again, to prove that the given text does, in fact, not speak of the Trinity.  Here is a case in point.

In the following verses notice that the "he" is the masculine pronoun denoting the city of Jerusalem.   In Hebrew, as in many other languages, every noun is classified as either male or female.  For example, in my native tongue, cars were called "she" and trucks were called "he".  With grammar like that in mind, it is not at all surprising that a city could be called a "he".   In his days (after Christ's return) Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely. And this is His (Jerusalem's) name by which He (Jerusalem) shall be called, JEHOVAH, OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. 23:5-6.

In spite of the fact that the Barnes commentary is trinitarian in its outlook, the commentary writes, The name Yahweh our Righteousness was given to the righteous Sprout: here (in 23:6) it (that name) is given to Jerusalem. Jeremiah, in 33:16 applies the name, JEHOVAH, OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS, also to Jerusalem. Barnes. This is the same stance that Sir Anthony Buzzard takes.  According to him in Hebrew the name reads, Jehovah, the righteousness of us.

Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will raise to David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and act wisely, and shall do judgment and justice in the earth.  It is agreed that "righteous Branch" refers to Christ.  Trinitarians jump on the chance to prove their point and say, Christ, will be called, JEHOVAH, OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.  

Barnes writes: Messiah is here called Yahweh.  This puts Christ on the same level as "God, the Father".  They have it wrong, it is not Christ who is called Jehovah, it is Jerusalem which, in the future will be called Jehovah, the righteousness of us.  About this particular verse, Sir Anthony Buzzard writes: It is amazing how some clutch desperately; trying to prove the doctrine of the Trinity even where it is not to be found.

Even for those who insist that the name refers to Christ, notice how various Bibles translate this phrase, but in no case, is Christ called Jehovah:

• And this is the name by which he shall be called; The Lord, the Author of our happiness.”
• Dr. Blayney seems to follow the Septuagint; he translates thus, “And this is the name by which Jehovah shall call him, Our Righteousness.”
• In my old MS. Bible, the first English translation ever made, it is thus: And this is the name that thei schul clepen him: oure rigtwise Lord. (They shall call him: our righteous Lord.)
• Coverdale’s, the first complete English translation of the Scriptures ever printed, (1535), has given it thus: And this is the name that they shall call him: even the Lorde oure rightuous Maker. Clarke.  In none of these translations does Jeremiah even come close to calling Christ, Jehovah.

Let's quit saying that the Bible means something that is not even written there!

False prophets

Jehovah says, Behold, I am against the prophets who use their tongues and say, He (the Lord) says. 23:31.  Likely most of us have heard a televangelist or even a local preacher shouting out something like: Last night the Lord said to me.  When, in fact, it was not the Lord's voice he heard; maybe it was the accountant's voice which said, ask for financial donations, we are running short of funds.  The Lord says I am against the prophets who ... say, He says.  False prophets (preachers) were prevalent then and they still are. See Ezekiel 13.

Then Jehovah said to me, What do you see, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs are very good, and the bad are very bad, so that they cannot be eaten, they are so bad. 24:3.
   

Next Jeremiah gives his listeners an object lesson.  Like these good figs, so I will acknowledge the exiles of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans for their good. By becoming prisoners they saved their lives as Jeremiah had said they would. 

And I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am Jehovah; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God. For they shall return to Me with their whole heart.  When Cyrus, king of Persia, allowed them to return to Israel.

And like the bad figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad; surely so says Jehovah, So I will give ... the rest ... who remain in this land, and those who dwell in the land of Egypt; I will even make them a ... proverb, a gibe and a curse, there in all places where I shall drive them. And I will send the sword, the famine, and the plague among them until they are destroyed from the land that I gave to them and to their fathers. 24:3-10

The Lord told Jeremiah to Stand in the court of Jehovah's house and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in Jehovah's house. 26:2.  He was to speak to the people who "go to church", those who gather in Jehovah's house.  

They did not like what they heard, so they said to him, You shall surely die!  However, before they could take action the rulers of the city came to intervene.  And the priests and the prophets spoke to the rulers and to all the people, saying, Let a death sentence be for this man. 26:11.  The priests and the prophets asked for a death sentence for Jeremiah because he had spoken the truth; truth they did not like to hear.

What is so sad about this is that the same scenario has repeated itself time and again throughout history.  The priests and the religious leaders have incessantly clamoured for blood: eg. 

• the crusades sanctioned by the popes; 
• the Spanish Inquisition (Inquisición española), was established in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs; 
• Michael Servetus (because he did not believe in the Trinity) - burned at the stake by John Calvin; 
• John Huss - burned at the stake, 
• etc, etc, with an almost endless list. Wikipedia.

It is absolutely amazing how many of the church's leaders, throughout history, have lost sight of the basic premise of Christianity: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!

Make Yourself Nice

Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard its spots? Then you also may do good, who are accustomed to doing evil. 13:23.

It seems that ever since Abraham convinced his offspring that they were special because Jehovah had chosen them, the Jewish people have had a tendency to look down on others. Certainly, their feeling is that any Ethiopian would gladly give anything to change from being black to being a Jew if only he could.  Ethiopian Jews in particular have faced discrimination from non-Black Jews. Wikipedia: Racism in Israel.   An Ethiopian can't change his race any more than a leopard can change its spots.  But both the Ethiopian and the leopard can do that as easily as bad people can make themselves good. 

Woe to you, O Jerusalem! Will you not be made clean? How long will it still be? 13:27.  Again Jehovah is calling His wayward people to repent.   How long till the prodigal son will come home?

Jeremiah knew a thing or two about public speaking and psychology.  He made good use of it in this situation.   When ... this people ... say to you, Why has Jehovah pronounced all this great evil against us? Or what is our iniquity, or what is our sin that we have committed against Jehovah our God? Then you shall say to them, Because your fathers have forsaken Me, says Jehovah ... and have not kept My Law.   

Now his listeners were all ears; this preacher was saying good things about them. They were innocent and the problem was caused by their fathers; they like this preacher and they will keep on listening.  Then the preacher throws the punch; And you have done worse than your fathers. 16:10-12.  

Jeremiah lost his following; now they turn to ridicule.  Tauntingly they say, Where is the Word of Jehovah? Let it come now! 17:15.  For a long time already, Jeremiah, you have been saying that Babylon will come and destroy us.  If you are really preaching the Word of the Lord, Let it (the destruction) come now!  BRING IT ON!  Prove that what you are saying is true. 

Choose Life or Death

A similar scenario is repeated in the New Testament.   There will come in the last days scoffers (mockers) ... saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For two thousand years you have been preaching that Christ is coming back, well, if you were telling the truth, it would already have happened! BRING IT ON! 

For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation. 2 Peter 3:3-4.  Nothing has changed since the creation of the universe and nothing will ever change.  

Of course, not all things are as they were since creation.

Peter writes: For this they willingly are ignorant of:

1. The earth was void and became habitable,
2. Then, the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished (Noah's flood), 2 Peter 3:6 KJV
3. But God has commanded the present heavens and earth to remain until the day of judgment. Then they will be set on fire, and ungodly people will be destroyed. 2 Peter 3:7 CEV. This is why they, the ungodly, won't accept as fact, the promise of Christ's return, they do not like the ensuing consequences?

As the Chaldean army was marching closer and closer to Jerusalem, Jeremiah puts a tough choice into the minds of the Israelites:

1. He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the plague. They are thinking: Surely, if we are inside the walls of the city, our army will protect us from those barbarians. 
2. But he who goes out and falls to the Chaldeans who are all around you, he shall live, and his life shall be his prize.  On the other hand, they are thinking, If we do go outside the city, the best we can hope for is that we will become prisoners of war; if, and that is a big if, Jeremiah knows what he is talking about and if he is telling the truth.

Jeremiah told them that that is exactly what they could expect; to be prisoners of war in a foreign country till their death or else death inside the city walls now.  

• Death by the sword, 
• by famine 
• or by one of the diseases brought on by dead corpses lying all around.

Which should they choose? 21:9.  Life as slaves in a foreign country or trust that their army would keep them safe inside the city walls.

Preach Peace or Be Ignored

Jeremiah is getting frustrated.  He has preached and preached, begging his people to repent of their sinful ways, but they refuse to listen.  So he says, Therefore I am full of the fury of Jehovah;

I am weary with holding in; You refuse to listen so I will pour it (my message) out on the children in the street, and on the circle of young men together.  at least they are not so set in their sinful habits, maybe they will listen. 6:11.

For everyone from the least of them (the goat herder)  even to the greatest of them (the bank manager) cuts off a profit, they will take what they say is their share; and from the prophet even to the priest (from the preacher to the priest), everyone deals falsely.  They tell us things that are not biblical and preach things that are not true.

They have also healed the hurt of the daughter of my people (the Jewish nation) slightly, saying, Peace, peace.  It makes us feel good when the preachers say, the enemy will never seriously attack North America, our forces are looking after us; but inwardly we know that there is no peace. 6:13-14.

Why does frankincense come to Me from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country?  The most expensive incense and the sweetest smelling sugar cane have no meaning to Me.  Large gifts to the church or beautifully sung solos are of no value unless you live a holy life!

Your burnt offerings are not pleasing, nor your sacrifices sweet to Me. 6:20    You can be as religious as all getup, but your empty Sunday morning lip service is not pleasing ... to Me; 

Change Your Lifestyle

• but if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings (change your lifestyle), 
• if you completely do judgment (pursue justice) between a man and his neighbor; 
• if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, 
• and do not shed innocent blood in this place, 
• nor walk after other gods (e.g. greed and lust) to your hurt; 

then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, forever and ever. Jeremiah told the people that this is Jehovah's conditional promise to them.  However, rather than listening to Jeremiah they gathered to themselves prophets who preached peace and safety without any conditions.  This sounds exactly like those preachers who preach nothing except "God is love".  There is another aspect to Jehovah's personality.

Behold, you trust in lying words that cannot do any good. Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, ... and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name?  This all sound so contemporary, doesn't it?

You claim that We are delivered to do all these abominations? 7:5-10.  Even though they did not say these words to The Lord, their actions spoke their meaning loud and clear. Lord, You delivered us from the Egyptians, the Philistines, the Moabites and the Assyrians so that we could keep on committing all these sins.

                  

Then, Jeremiah changes from simple preaching to using the illustration of a smelting furnace which was used for melting silver so that the dross (impurities) could be removed.  With that illustration, he is pointing out the hard-heartedness of his people. 

He says, I have warned you so long and so passionately that the bellows are burned, Which Kimchi interprets of the mouth and throat of the prophet, which, through reproving the people, were dried up, and become raucous and hoarse. Gills Commentary. 

the lead is melted by the fire; The lead, which was then used in refining silver, as quicksilver is now, is consumed of the fire, and has not done its work. Matthew Henry.   All the warnings Jeremiah gave are wasted like the lead in the fire, for the wicked are not plucked away; the dross has still not been removed; the refiner (Jehovah) melts in vain.

We can see Jehovah's heart is broken and Jeremiah is weeping when they hear the nations calling Israel, Reprobate silver; the dross which has no good metal in it to be separated, the mass being all dross. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown.   It was all just dross, like the hearts of the Israelites in Jeremiah's time; as the hearts of the North Americans now.

Why did the nations ridicule Israel this way?  because Jehovah has rejected them. 6:29-30.

If You Don't 

Jehovah will call His people to repent only for a while, but if they keep on rejecting Him, He will reject them too.  Behold, the noise of the rumor has come, and a great commotion out of the north country (Babylon), to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a den of jackals.10:22.  North America has already tasted what terrorists can do, but still, our leaders would rather cheat and lie than try to turn their nation toward a holy lifestyle.

For the customs of the people are vain; for one cuts a tree out of the forest with the axe, the work of the hands of the workman. They adorn it with silver and with gold. 10:3-4.   Devout Christians in Brazil do not "do" Christmas trees because it is a heathen practice.  

Oh, how I wish that the Christians of North America would shake their Roman Catholic heritage.
